D I N & iOAN /Micronica Records interview

04/04 Fidull x Micronica • Spring Break @ OFF Kultur Budapest ← Event

How did it all start? How did music first enter your lives, and what was the moment when you felt you didn’t just want to listen, but also create?

We’ve known each other since early childhood, so in many ways this journey has always been shared. Music was present from the very beginning – we both went through music school, were involved in Latvian traditional dancing and explored singing in different formats, from solo to ensembles.

The shift from listening to creating came later, around our early teenage years – maybe 14 or 15 – when we first discovered club culture. That period changed everything. We started throwing small private parties, experimenting, playing music and learning by doing. There was no plan, no strategy – just curiosity and passion.

Looking back now, those small steps slowly grew into what Micronica Records is today.

What is the Latvian party scene like? How do you see it from the inside – what are its defining characteristics, and how does it differ from other countries?

Latvia is a small country, so naturally the scene is quite compact and niche. People tend to separate into different genres and communities can be quite fragmented.

At the same time, there’s something special about it – the crowd is open-minded and curious. Even if the scene is not huge, there’s a genuine appreciation for different sounds.

That said, building something consistent here is challenging. That’s partly why we focused on growing Micronica beyond borders – connecting with artists and communities across Europe and slowly shaping an international presence while still representing where we come from.

What does the Micronica sound mean to you? How would you describe it in a few words, and how much of it is reflected in your DJ sets?

It’s actually quite difficult to define the Micronica sound in just a few words, because it has evolved a lot over the years.

At its core, it’s about layers, textures and subtle movement – music that doesn’t shout but slowly pulls you in. It’s something you feel over time rather than instantly.

This philosophy is very present in our DJ sets as well. We focus on flow, storytelling and creating a journey rather than just playing tracks. Whether it’s a club or a more intimate setting, the idea is always the same – to build something that connects with people on a deeper level.

Where does the name Micronica come from, and what’s behind it? What inspired it, and how do you decide what fits the label and what doesn’t?

The name comes from combining two ideas – “micro”, referring to the minimal / microhouse roots of the label and “chronica”, representing time, progression and storytelling.

From the beginning, Micronica was never just about releasing music – it was about creating moments and documenting them through sound. From our early pop-up events to the releases we put out today, everything is part of a larger timeline.

When it comes to selecting music for the label, we don’t follow trends too strictly. Of course, the sound evolves, but the main criteria has always been the same – if it fits the feeling, the depth and the identity of Micronica, it belongs.

What are you most proud of so far? Which release, milestone, or moment has been the most defining for you?

We’re proud of the journey itself.

What started as a simple idea – building a small community around music – has grown into a label that is now recognized internationally. Our releases have been played by respected artists across the globe, from clubs to major festivals, which is something we never took for granted.

Our vinyl releases are also a big milestone for us – three records, almost sold out, which shows that there’s real support behind what we do.

Coming from a country with less than 2 million people, it means a lot to see how far the project has reached. But at the same time, we feel like we’re only getting started.

What have you been listening to the most lately? Which artists or tracks have had the biggest impact on you recently?

We’re constantly digging – both new and old music. That contrast is what keeps things fresh and inspiring.

It’s hard to point out specific tracks because we go through a lot of music, but there are definitely artists who continue to influence us in different ways – from timeless acts like Depeche Mode to artists like Arapu, Silat Beksi, Barac, Triptil and many others shaping the current sound.

For us, it’s less about trends and more about feeling – finding music that still has something to say.

What are your plans for the future? Where do you want to take the label and your own musical journey next?

The main focus stays the same – music first, always.

We want to continue developing Micronica as both a label and a community. That means more vinyl releases, expanding our digital series with new concepts and giving space to both established and emerging artists.

At the same time, we’re putting a lot of energy into events and collaborations across Europe – like this one in Budapest with Fidull – building connections and bringing the Micronica experience to different cities.
